TAKE HEART

Several years ago, my daughter and I captured this photograph in the coastal region of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. The foamy white waves were magnificent as they rolled in and kissed our feet. The scene was peaceful as we listened to the rhythmic sounds of the obedient waves. However, this marvelous creation of God also possesses an ominous side. We do not have to venture far into the ocean to recognize how frightening and intimidating it can be.

Similarly, we do not have to experience life’s challenges for long to recognize how alarming and overpowering it can be. One of the last things Jesus said to his disciples before He prayed for us was this, “In the world, you will have tribulation.  But take heart; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 (ESV).

Jesus did not soften the truth. He was not vague about it. He emphatically stated, “you will have tribulation.” Also, Jesus gives us an imperative, Take heart”It means to be of good cheer, be encouraged, and be brave. Taking heart does not mean to deny the severity of the trial, but to choose to have hope because He has“overcome the world”. Jesus is our victory!
